The only three reasons I can think of are the following:

1. You are paranoid that somebody will hack into the Department of Motor Vehicles and use your licence plate number to find your address and then go steal your car.

2. You are using stolen licence plates and don’t want to get caught by the authorities.

3. That’s just what other people do and so there must be a reason for you to also do it.

Don’t we all drive our cars on the street where our licence plates are freely visible to an infinite number of thugs, hoodlums, reprobate swine, and fraudulent skinflints?

UPDATE:

pasghetticode posted a link to a great article on this topic from 2012. Who knew!?

Pretty sure #3 is the reason.

Though I can’t personally verify this, I’ve been told that U.S. plate numbers are on Carfax, you can use Carfax to get an address with only the plate number.

Well it isn’t all that hard to just use a photo editor to cover the licence plate. I find that to be much more acceptable and normal than trying to block it with a household object or sticking your finger in front of the camera lens or something along those lines.

As far as number one goes, my dad is a mere insurance agent, and he has access to ownership info via plate #.

License plate fraud is probably a valid reason.

I've heard/seen many insults, and made some up, but what is a skinflint?

Haha I don’t really know, I heard my uncle call somebody a disingenuous skinflint. Ok just looked it up, it means miser/penny-pincher/Scrooge. Probably not the definition I was meaning to get across but I like the sound of it

Haha I like it! My go to insult to throw out is asshat. Might add skinflint to the repertoire.

So you’re going to yell at me for covering my plates in one of my recent posts, I assume.

I’ve come to the point where if I see a covered plate using a finger I automatically eliminate that vehicle from my list. If someone goes on MS paint and covers it that is 100% fine with me but the finger in front of the camera blocking 75% of the picture lets me know you are a stupid shit head and I don’t want to buy anything from you.

I would love for some pervert to come to my house and masturbate on my old truck or whatever you have in mind. Just remember that you are fair game for my passion to protect my property and I do know how to shoot my guns.

People are much less likely to use your reg this way irl than on the net because it is far less probably someone is walking around with notepad+pencil or even taking pics of parked cars with a cameraphone than someone googling your reg on the net in the comfort and privacy of his home

Car cloning to a degree in that if someone wants to brake the law or is driving a stolen vehicle they can make up a licence plate from a similar vehicle and the owner of the real licence plate takes the hit for fines and points.

I used to MS paint them out on friends cars I’d cleaned but had ‘detailing’ plates made that I use to cover the actual ones when I take pictures.

@Widget Ice-T doesn’t cover his license plates. Because according to him “I don’t care, you can roll up on me.....you’ll just get shot.”

Nah, there may be some merit to it after all. See pasghetticode’s comment for the link
